Tate had a bold vision for a museum ‘first’: to integrate a HTC VIVE VR experience into the heart of Modigliani at Tate Modern, providing visitors with a unique layer to their experience. This meticulous VR reimagining of Modigliani’s last Parisian studio is fully immersive, allowing users to step into the room where he lived and worked in the final months of his life.
Provoking empathy, sparking connections with the people and artworks seen in the exhibition, this experience provides a powerful context for the last room of the exhibition containing Modigliani’s final Self Portrait in reality, and a window into the artist’s state of mind at that time. 60+ objects and artworks were authentically recreated using extensive art historical research, and the art itself as reference. Diegetic audio and first hand accounts, from those who knew him best, were designed to heighten empathy with the artist, through presence and immersion.
